When Your Light Feels Dim

Holding On to Faith in Difficult Seasons

Have you even been in a season where the darkness seems overwhelming? You're not sure how to pray or what to pray for. Hope feels distant. And the light that once burned brightly seems to flicker.

If you’ve ever felt this way, you’re not alone.

Even some of the heroes of the Bible went through dark seasons. King David cried out in despair in the book of Psalms. Both the prophet Elijah and Moses became so discouraged that each one asked God to take his life rather than continue on in his circumstances.

When we are hurting or discouraged, it's hard to be the light that God calls us to be. But the truth is that even a dim light can pierce the darkness.

While we may think of shining our light as a bold witness or grand gesture for Christ, often it more closely resembles a quiet assurance, or what Paul described as a "peace that surpasses all understanding." Those around us can see Christ in the way we handle pain and discouragement as much as in the way we proclaim Him in more joyful times.

If you’re in a difficult season, remember these truths:

1. God is still working even when you cannot see it.
Sometimes it seems like things will never change, but God's timing is perfect. You can trust Him to complete the work He started in you. You can rejoice in the knowledge that He is faithful even in the middle of the struggle.

2. Your struggle may become someone else’s encouragement.
When we remain faithful through hardship, others see a real, authentic faith. As James 1:2-4 teaches us, our trials will produce endurance and maturity. Often it is our trials that shape our testimony as we are able to see and share with others how God was faithful even during our darkest times.

3. God doesn’t require perfection to use you.
As Paul reminds us in 2 Corinthians 12 - God's grace is sufficient - His power is made perfect in our weakness. What He asks of us is a willing heart - not perfection.

Your light may feel dim today, but God can still use it to guide someone else through the darkness.

Keep shining.
